Sarah Yancey on the Practicalities of Living the Dream

July 26, 2018 by Lisa Gerber Leave a Comment

“…while Mark guides backcountry trips out of the hut, Sarah runs the show and home schools their kids, Grace and Alden, who’ve spent every winter there since 2005. It’s a life perfectly summed up by Alden, who says, ‘What you do inside, I don’t really know.’ – Adventure Jounral

Sarah and Mark Yancey own Boulder Hut Adventures, a remote backcountry ski hut in the stunning Purcell Mountains in Southeast British Columbia, Canada. During the ski season, they and their two kids live there hosting guests for a week of powder ski touring. The kids are homeschooled and Adventure Journal called Mark and Sarah “the most awesome parents in the history of parenting.”

It sounds like a dream come true, doesn’t it? Today I talk to Sarah and she shared with us how the vision came to be, and how they made the idea happen. But we also get real and talk about the practicalities of living a dream, running a business, raising kids, trends in the backcountry ski lodge industry, and the higher purpose of it all – the greater impact on the people who visit, the environment in which they operate, and their legacy of course, those lucky kids, Grace and Alden.

Great story; great lessons. With that, let’s listen in and gear up for what’s next.

What Others Are Saying

Thanks to Danny Brown for listing Lisa as a top 5 blogger to watch in 2013:

I first got to know Lisa Gerber from working with her when she was part of Arment Dietrich, and I knew then that she was a smart cookie… Her blog (has) become a staple part of my reading diet.
